The Power of Crying Out
A Book for Your Next Crisis
God wants to demonstrate His mighty power in our world so that people will know that He is the true and living God and recognize their need for Him. He may allow crises in the lives of people so that He can fulfill the promise of Psalm 50:15, which says, “Call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.” He is anxious to deliver those who call upon Him.
Jesus illustrated this sequence when He told His disciples to travel across the Sea of Galilee. He got in the boat with them and went to sleep. Soon a violent storm came up. When the waves crashed over the boat, the disciples feared for their very lives. Only then did they cry out, “Master save us or we perish” and only then did Jesus still the storm and bring them to their destination. For normal prayer to be effective, it must be fervent and righteous. (See James 5:16.) That is why a cry is usually more effective, such as in the following cases.
- My husband and I had been praying daily for five years that God would give us a second child. Since I am nearing 40, I knew time was running out. Last summer, we attended your seminar and learned about crying out. At the end of July, we cried out for God to either remove our strong desire for a child or allow us to conceive. I even asked for a girl. In August, I found out I was pregnant. The next day, we received lab results from a test my husband had the month before, showing insufficient sperm count to conceive. We cried tears of joy when our daughter actually arrived!
- A business owner cried out for God to deliver him from bankruptcy, and within a month, his company became profitable.
- Parents cried out that God would deliver their runaway daughter from evil companions, and she returned home in repentance.
- A couple cried out for God to sell a piece of property that had been listed for two years with no results. Within 24 hours, they had a contract for the asking price.
- A group of state legislators met every week to cry out for the needs of colleagues. One legislator’s assistant asked if they could cry out about his brain tumor. They did, and within a short time it cleared up.
